Jennilee Beaupre and Kale Bonham recognized for commitment to youth.

Congratulations to Bachelor of Education, Teacher Candidates Jennilee Beaupre and Kale Bonham on their recent Business Council of Manitoba Aboriginal Education Award for 2011-2012. This academic award is offered to students who have demonstrated leadership, motivation, and a commitment to learning.

Jennilee Beaupre

Jennilee Beaupre, an early years teacher candidate, received the Business Award for her dedication to child development. She was recognized for her work as a volunteer where she acts as a role model and helps children who have academic difficulties. In addition, Jennilee holds a B.A. (Honours) degree in Psychology and Developmental Studies from the University of Winnipeg. This previous education has prepared her to help children and their families build strong relationships with teachers and other professionals who work with children. By fostering these connections and relationships, Jennilee has been able to offer children and their families’ academic success. In addition, she has been a volunteer with the Winnipeg School Division, Special Olympics, East End Penny Ball, Learning for Life Homework Club, and the Selkirk Healing Centre.

Kale Bonham

Kale Bonham, a senior years teacher candidate received the Business Award for her commitment to inner city youth and the use of art to create social change. Kale recognized in her first year practicum that she could combine her efforts in her inner city classroom with the work she was already conducting through the inner city anti-gang program Aboriginal Youth Opportunities (AYO). In her practicum classroom she motivated students to participate in an after school activity to recreate their neighborhood lamp post banners with positive messages. Determined to see the student work hung, she worked tirelessly to secure funding. The banners now line Selkirk Ave in Winnipeg and Kale has successfully demonstrated that youth have the power to effect change. Kale holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from the University of Manitoba.
