Critiquing Speeches

Six Minutes – Speaking and Presentation Skills has an excellent explanation on how to critique speeches. Critiquing doesn’t mean just criticizing what is wrong with something. Critiquing is thinking critically about an ideas behind the words. Critiquing is about:

  • asking questions about the purpose of the speech,
  • the intended audience,
  • the content of the speech,
  • the context in which a speech is given
  • how someone delivers a speech, their posture, and their voice

This website allows you to critique historical speeches like Martin Luther King’s famous 1963 speech ‘I Have a Dream’ as well as other famous speakers from Al Gore to Steve Jobs.
