United Way: Making a Difference in our Community

October 15, 2013 at 9:51 am

This past weekend, many of you enjoyed a bountiful Thanksgiving dinner with your families and gave thanks for what you have…but not everyone in our community is as fortunate.

That’s why the University of Manitoba United Way team calls upon you each fall to help Winnipeggers in need.

As physicians, we serve as role models, and ought to appreciate the stature and recognition we receive as health professionals throughout the community.

As a faculty, we are committed to social accountability and to educating our students to understand the importance of giving back. I have no doubt that students who take on social responsibility during their medical training will carry it forward into their careers as practicing physicians.

We started the summer off with our Faculty of Medicine Habitat for Humanity house build. We will hand over the keys to the house next month to a family of six and know that we have helped change their lives for the better.

As we head into fall, we’re continuing with the momentum of making a difference.

We have three University of Manitoba co-chairs for the University’s 2013 United Way Campaign including Dr. Sharon Macdonald, Associate Professor, Community Health Sciences and Medical Director for the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program.

Last year, The U of M’s combined contributions totaled more than $560,000. On Bannatyne Campus, we raised $217,146 from 200 donors. The United Way Winnipeg is a huge asset to our province. Supporting the United Way helps build the society we want to live in – where the social determinants of health are addressed and challenged.

I was pleased to learn about the impact that U of M giving to the United Way 2012 campaign has had on Manitobans:
• 225 children living in low-income areas gained access to afterschool programming like homework clubs;
• 275 families facing financial struggles had access to nutrition workshops on a budget; and
• 5,000 isolated, displaced or homeless individuals were given access to supports and services that meet basic human needs like a warm meal.

We had a 4.8 increase in donations at Bannatyne Campus in 2012 over the previous year. Our goal in 2013 is to increase participation from 11 to 15 per cent.

One of the ongoing United Way fund-raisers we want to institute across campus is “Twonies” for casual Fridays. If you would like to wear jeans on Friday, please donate $2 to United Way. Collection/stickers are available at 260 Brodie or you can collect funds in your own area. As well, we will also be holding a book sale, early bird draw and other events.

While the campus United Way campaign runs until Christmas, we are looking for early giving. Please return your pledge form by Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. for a chance to win an iPad.

How do you plan to make a difference this year?
